A strange morning

Past simple vs past continuous

Past simple = completed action. Past continuous = ongoing background action. State and perception verbs (be, know, see, hear, like) do not take the continuous form.

I was walking to school when I suddenly noticed a strange dog. It was barking loudly. While I was calling my friend the dog ran away. Eventually it stopped near the park. At that moment a woman shouted: 'That's my dog!' She immediately ran to hug it. It was quite an adventure!

Je marchais vers l'école quand j'ai soudainement remarqué un étrange chien. Il aboyait fort. Pendant que j'appelais mon ami le chien s'est enfui. Il s'est finalement arrêté près du parc. À ce moment-là une femme a crié : 'C'est mon chien !' Elle a immédiatement couru pour le serrer dans ses bras. C'était toute une aventure !
